Analog vs IP Cameras: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Two security cameras installed on the corner of a New Jersey home, with the installer's ladder still leaning against the wall
A real install in New Jersey — same job, two camera types.

Analog records reliable 1080p in black-and-white at night, for $580 installed. IP records in colour at night and reaches your phone, from $1,380. That is the whole difference in one line.

When analog is enough

If what you want is a record of what happened at the door, the gate or the parking area, analog does it. It records continuously or on motion, in 1080p, and the footage exports fine for an insurance claim or a police report.

Its limit is the dark. Infrared gives you a clear black-and-white image — you will see that someone was there and what they did, but not the colour of their jacket or their car.

When it is worth stepping up

If the property matters at night. The 5MP line keeps colour after dark, and colour is what turns "someone was here" into "that was a grey pickup". For recognising people and vehicles, that matters more than resolution.

If you want to look from your phone. Remote viewing comes with the IP lines, not with analog. If you travel, or you have a second location, that is usually the deciding factor — not image quality.

One question decides it

Do you need to recognise someone at night, or is it enough to have the record? If recognising matters, go IP. If not, analog covers you and leaves $800 in your pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do analog cameras record in color at night?

No. The 2MP analog line uses infrared night vision, which is black and white. Full color at night starts with the 5MP IP Full Color system.

Can I view an analog system from my phone?

Remote phone access is included on the 5MP and 4K IP systems, not on the 2MP analog line, which is video only. If watching from your phone matters, choose IP.

Can I mix analog and IP cameras?

The two use different recorders (DVR for analog, NVR for IP), so a system is built around one or the other. Tell us your priorities and we'll recommend the line that fits — and what it costs installed.
